What is it about a uniform that gets us all in one way or another? Beginning in infancy, we automatically recognise uniform as having a sense of authority, to be respected and feared. A uniform can also represent safety and young children quickly learn that if they feel threatened they can go to someone in uniform for help. Our early perception of work uniforms also shapes our future.

With the sad news this week of the death of Sergeant Sarah Bryant whilst serving with the British Army in Afghanistan the question is once again raised about whether or not women should be in uniform, performing such risky jobs.

The saying that all publicity is good publicity is not strictly true. If a celebrity constantly has bad press, this will eventually have a negative effect on their reputation and the way they are perceived by the public. Everybody is allowed to make mistakes and most people understand that any mistake a celebrity makes will be magnified tenfold through the press. This does put a certain responsibility on them to behave in a certain way and many of them do but with the spotlight of the world’s paparazzi constantly on them, impeccable behaviour is bound to slip occasionally. And why shouldn’t they? They are only human after all.

There comes a sad time in every actor’s life when he or she finds the work is drying up. You go from being the gorgeous, latest thing to be seen in every presenting position or TV drama going until people are sick of your face. You then take a break to raise a family, return for bit parts as the latest newcomers mother and then it happens - that gradual decent into the abyss of commercial actors advertising aids for the elderly.

Pop down your local job centre and trawl through the adverts for cleaners, hod carriers and care assistants and you will soon expect to see the same old jobs thrown up time and time again. Having done this myself it kind of becomes quite repetitive. The same old companies, the same old jobs, the same old pay, advertised week after week.
